When I was 10 years old, I spent a weekend with Mama Lynn. My parents decide to work that weekend, so Mama Lynn picked me up from school on Friday and drove straight to her house. We played a few rounds of checkers before dinner. Early the next morning, Mama Lynn showed me a dress that she bought for me to wear to sunrise service. It was a white dress with pink roses across the bottom. A white headband also came with it. I loved that dress even if it meant getting dressed at 5:30 to wear it.
By 6:00 am, Mama Lynn parked her car just in time for us to get our seats. It was a wonderful service, unlike any service I have ever attended before. I understood the Pastor's message and he spoke to my heart. When he gave the alter call, I squeezed Mama Lynn's hand and told her that I wanted to go down front. She stood beside me when I asked Christ into my life. It was a very special moment.
Later that afternoon, Mama Lynn's girlfriends came over for an early dinner. Mama Lynn was a great cook and I'll always remember her special Easter feast of roasted lamb, asparagus, herb potatoes, homemade rolls, and iced tea. Dessert was warm apple crisp with vanilla bean ice cream.
The evening was topped off with a gift for me. I opened the box to discover a bible with my name inscribed on the front. As I opened to the front cover, there was a familiar date inside. I looked at Mama Lynn with a broad smile.
"Wow, this is the day I was born!" I said, pointing at the date.
"You're right honey. I bought this bible the day you entered this world, ten years ago. I was holding it for this very moment."
We hugged, took pictures, and ate our dessert.
Mama Lynn has gone to heaven now, but I still have that bible. I even keep one of the pictures inside the front cover. The one with me standing with Mama Lynn in my white dress, carrying my new bible.
