TITLE: Birthday Intercessor
By Shirley Thomas

"Happy Birthday to you," sang Anna's wo-workers. Little did they know that she was not in the celebrating spirit. Today was her thirty-fifth birthday and her co-workers had been busy for weeks preparing what they thought was a suprise birthday celebration for her. Anna had figured out what they were up to about two weeks ago. She really didn't want to spoil their fun or seem unappreciative, so she had put on a birthday party hat and a "happy" face.

Until 9:30 that morning Anna had been excited about her birthday, too. She and her husband, Ethan, had planned a special dinner celebration and on the approaching week-end her whole family would be getting together. The telephone call she had received at 9:30 that morning had changed her perspective on so many things in her life. In less than one minute of time, her life had changed and it would affect her whole family. Anna's life had been almost perfect. The only flaw being that after trying to become pregnant for three years, she and Ethan had still been unable to conceive. They had been in no hurry when they first got married because they had wanted to enjoy each other for awhile. They had decided to wait four years before extending their family to include children. Two months ago Anna and Ethan decided to consult the medical specialist in regards to their difficulty. A series of tests and consultations with various doctors had taken place. In the beginning there didn't seem to be any major problems, but then one of the test came back with an "out of range" reading and the doctors began to order more tests and finally a biopsy. Today the call from her doctor's office brought the unwelcome news that she needed to make preparations to enter the hospital for an extensive series of tests. The doctor had informed her it was very probable that had ovarian cancer. As Anna heard the word cancer, her heart almost stopped.

While everyone around her was enjoying the cake and the fellowship, Anna was making mental notes of everything she needed to do before entering the hospital. She had a high profile job that demanded her attention, she had obligations at her church and she dreaded telling her husband and family. She didn't want to see the worry come crashing into their faces. She knew she had to do all these things and she had to do them quickly. Her mind was filled with so many emotions and her heart felt like it was going to explode. In the midst of all this Anna began to feel a strong sense of peace. The fear and panic she had felt so intensely such a short time before had disappeared. The fear of the unknown seem to vanish. Anna actually began to enjoy her birthday celebration and even was able to eat a piece of her cake. Just as the party was winding down, she was paged to answer the telephone. She couldn't believe how light-hearted she felt as she answered. "What is wrong with me?", she wondered, "I've just received terrible news and I'm not bouncing off the walls anymore." The caller was a friend and intercessor from Anna's church, Ruthie Nelson. Ruthie began speaking immediately, "Anna, I've been praying for you all morning. As I began my prayer time this morning, God's Spirit kept putting your lovely face before me. I just began to pray for Him to be with you today and protect you and then I heard myself praying very specific things concerning you. I still don't understand why, but I know God wanted you to feel safe, joyful and full of His peace. I can remember praying that you would feel so safe that you would become lighthearted. Now Anna, I don't know what's going on in your life right now, but I do know that God knows, and He is right beside you. He doesn't want you to carry this load by yourself. He loves you very much and will never leave you. And by the way, is it your birthday?" Anna replied, "Yes, Ruthie it is indeed my physical birthday, but my spiritual birthday is coming up soon and I'm going to have a celebration of that, too." As Anna hung up the telephone, she knew that regardless of what the medical results were, she was not alone, God was on her side. Nothing is impossible with God!

Very nice, I just wonder am I out of the loop or is "wo-workers" a new term? I thought of "woe is me" type of job but if not other than that, I really liked it and thank God for intercessory prayer.
