Now John he was a strange old man
He did not speak a lot
When he spoke his words were grand
So him the people sought
Here’s a story he told one day
A story from his past
A lesson he learned along the way
A lesson that did last
When I was just a lad of nine
We lived out on the farm
Thought a puppy would be divine
I’d hold him in my arms
So off I went to mom and dad
I told them my request
Oh a puppy would make me glad
I would feel truly blessed
A dog you have my dad declared
And him you just ignore
Mom spoke and said you’re not prepared
Puppies are such a chore
This story I will now make short
My puppy I did get
She’s had six pups at last report
My mom just had a fit
Eight dogs we then had on the farm
We started out with one
Too many dogs now cause alarm
I tell you it’s no fun
