Lesson from a Two Year Old
At least a dozen or more times during the day, I find myself issuing words of encouragement to my two and a half year old daughter. Whether it be something as simple as “Just try it again, sweetheart” or “Great job”, the smile that beams across her face at her successes is priceless.
I then began to reflect on this act and thought about my own disappointment when I find myself needing words of encouragement during difficult times and cannot find it, especially among believers. What if Christians took all of the positive encouragement one gives one’s own children and practiced it in the body of believers? What a lifted up people we would become. How many more smiles might we see?
Interestingly, we often get caught up in our own lives or problems. Who has time to worry about anyone else? Yet, when we are the ones in need of encouragement, we dare to complain about the lack of it.
It’s time to turn our selfishness into ministry. A ministry can be defined as an intentional purpose for one’s actions. Many of us can relate to being in churches where there is a period of welcoming or greeting. Rather than getting by on a simple “Hello”, wouldn’t it be wonderful to dare to do something different. How about something like, “Jesus said, I will never leave you nor forsake you…” Here’s one: “The blessing of the Lord is upon you!”
A simple ministry that takes less than a minute of your time could quite possibly make someone’s day, bring a smile to one’s face or change a life. I challenge you to listen for the voice of the Lord to speak to you during your prayer time and hear what God might want you to say to someone you encounter today.
