"Make bright the arrows; gather the shields: the Lord hath raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes: for his device is against Babylon, to destroy it; because it is the vengeance of the Lord, the vengeance of his temple.” Jeremiah 51: 11 KJV As believers in Christ, we truly need a golden retriever attitude; to be willing to go after a fallen brother or lost soul without worrying about getting muddy in the process. We need to exhibit enough compassion of the Spirit with a servant attitude to reach out to someone who is fallen or hurting without judgment. If we don't know how to help someone or have the resources to help them, we can at least pray and show mercy.

May God deliver us from a Pharisaical attitude. May God help us not to allow our busyness to distract us from the opportunities life gives us to show compassion….many times by chance as Luke 10 shows us. Many times our profession can make us hardened to the hurts and needs of others if we are not careful.

Indifference is one thing but childish thinking creates another problem. We cannot allow outward appearances, denominational walls, socioeconomic classes or social structures to continue to bring division within the body of Christ. God is after unity within the Body …true believers in Jesus Christ. It's as if there is body parts lying all over the battlefield of life and no one knows how to pick them up or try to put them back together. The devil is the enemy; not each other. It's time to lock shields of faith and realize who the true enemy is. In 2 Samuel 8: 7 David took the shields of gold he retrieved from the servants of Hadadezer after killing 22,000 Syrians and brought them back to Jerusalem. The enemy lies without the camp surrounding us with pressures and temptations. We need to cover each other's backs with prayer and the word. It's time we grow up in the Body of Christ and put pettiness aside.

Later on in 2 Chronicles 12:9 KJV the Bible says this: "Shishak the king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king's house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made." The enemy wants to take away our treasures. He wants to blind us from whom and what our true treasure is-souls! He wants us to stop covering and loving each other. God gives us a shield not only for ourselves but one another. Gold speaks of faith. My faith is not just to cover me; it's to cover others as well. We can't allow the enemy to carry off our treasures any longer. People are more valuable to God than material things. In Genesis 14 Abram, retrieved Lot from the King of Gomorrah after Lot was carried off along with goods and souls besides. When the King of Gomorrah offered Abram the spoils of war in exchange for the souls he recovered Abram denounced him. Abram told him that he wouldn't take one string of his shoe latchet lest the King say he made Abram rich. Our priority must always be souls. We must never accept the world's way of gaining possessions, fame or fortune at the expense of someone else's welfare. Abram valued a soul more than material possessions.

You never know who you may have the opportunity to minister to. That "bumb" on the street corner may be the next evangelist or prophet God raises up to speak to a nation. We need to be careful how we treat people and pray that God would increase our capacity to feel and show compassion. The Bible says to entertain strangers (Hebrews 13: 2 KJV) by which some have entertained angels. The Greek word for angel is aggelos (one who is sent-a messenger from God).

We need to pray that God would give us eyes of compassion and mercy and not judge according to the sight of our eyes. The Spirit of God knows all things and sees what we cannot in the natural. Let’s determine to lock shields with our hurting brothers and sisters in Christ no matter who or where they are. Let a spirit of compassion govern your heart and be willing to go the extra mile to help a soul in need.
