Calm

The Sound of His Voice

He found himself in a cave in Horeb. “Lord, I’m deeply afraid of Jezebel’s army. I’m told of her threats to kill me to me and I am alone. There are no other believers but me.” The Lord loved his normally powerful prophet and he told Elijah, “I’ll pass by your cave to strengthen you.”

At first, Elijah wondered what was going on! The wind blew so hard it started an avalanche but that wasn’t the Lord! Then an earthquake shook the mountain and a fire raged but the Lord was not in them! Finally, calm came over the mountain and over Elijah’s heart. He would know that voice anywhere. It was his Heavenly Father’s voice. It was the sweet voice that caused the birds to hush. It was the breath that breathed life into Adam, into every baby born in this world and into a new believer’s heart. He went outside to get closer and to speak with Him. The Lord said, “I may not be in Jezebel’s rage, or in the clamor of all of those fearful, dreadful thoughts you’ve been thinking, but my quiet gentle voice is the strong cord woven through your life. I will not, I will not forsake you. I’m difficult to hear sometimes, amidst the commotion of this world but know that I am the part of you that is incorruptible. Now I have some advice on how to take Jezebel…”

Of course that was exactly what Elijah needed. That calm assurance that the Lord was nearby refreshed him and the Lord’s advice on a battle plan kept him from feeling helpless. Elijah followed the Lord’s words in his obedient and powerful way.
