The petite Thai woman on the hospital bed did not look up. “It is not problem, Officer. I fill out statement.”
The policeman handed her the clipboard and pen. “Thank you. I will return later to collect it. Please write only the truth.”
Although the young woman’s bandaged forearms burned with pain, she struggled to a sitting position, took hold of the pen, and wrote what had transpired to bring her to this hopeless end. Tears coursed down her bronzed cheeks but they afforded her no comfort. She continued writing until she had poured her misery and hurt onto the page.
A shadow loomed over her and she looked up expecting the policeman. But the man, whose eyes were swollen from crying, was not the policeman. “Husband!” she exclaimed, “I surprised to see you! Why you come?”
He sat on the bed. “Your friend rang me. Told me you tried to kill yourself today. I came straight away.”
Sua looked away, “Please, you go now. I no good for you. Destroyed your life.”
He reached over to pick up the clipboard on her lap and began to read. The statement said:
To Policeman.
Today I try to kill myself. It because my life is ruined. I come to Australia as mail order bride. I marry Jason Oldfeld. Husband is kind and treat me good, tell me about Christians. I had everything, but threw all away.
I want fun. I steal his money and bring over old boyfriend from Thailand. We have big fun. Husband find out. He hurt real bad, but give me another chance. But I still want fun so I go to nightclub. Meet another Thai boy. He lots of fun. Husband find out I see two boys. He very sad but he does not kick me out home. He leaves instead. He keep paying bills but I don’t see him any more. I have more big fun with two boyfriends. Then I get pregnant. Old boyfriend ask whose baby is it. I don’t know. He so angry he go back to Thailand. I tell second boyfriend. He angry and go away too. When I three month pregnant money run out. I ring girlfriend and say I will kill myself. Then I cut wrists. Girlfriend smashes window and breaks into house. She finds me unconscious and brings me to hospital. That my story. I so sorry I make such a mess of life.

“You know, Sua, if you give this statement to the police they’ll deport you,” her husband said with emotion.
“I know. I deserve it. Fixes your problems too, yes?”
Jason studied his estranged wife closely, “Actually, Sua, it does not. You’re my wife. If they deport you, I will never see you again.”
“I treat you so bad, Jason. Why you want to see me?”
He pointed at her statement, “Do you mean everything you wrote? That you are sorry for messing everything up and that you had everything when we were together?”
Sua risked looking up, “Yes, it all true. I very sorry I hurt you bad.”
“You broke my heart many times over,” her husband said softly, “but if you are sorry, I will take you back again.”
She frowned, “I surprised. Why?”
Jason spoke from a distance, “When I was a teenager I wandered away from Jesus and behaved very badly. I grieved Him greatly. But I came to my senses and came back to Him. And He forgave me completely and gave me another chance. I love you so I offer you the same.”
“But what about child?” she asked.
“If you will remain my wife, when the baby is born, I will sign the birth certificate as the child’s father.”
“This biggest surprise! Why? This not your child.”
Her husband shook his head, “We are married. All I have is yours. All you have is mine. Therefore, this baby belongs to me through you. I will love the child as my own.”
Tears streamed down Sua’s cheeks. “I come home, husband. This time I make family with you.”
Jason folded the statement and put it in his pocket. Then he took her hands and helped her from the bed. “I’ll sign you out of hospital. Let’s go home.”
