Anger
“Be ye angry and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath (Eph.4:26 KJV).”
Raeanne stood on the street corner waiting for the bus to arrive. A blue Chrysler pulled up to the light and stopped. Two young men in their early twenties were sitting in the front seat laughing and joking. The one on the passenger side turned to her and said something foul. When she did not respond he spit at her. His slimy, warm, saliva landed on her right cheek just below her eye. At the moment of impact the light turned green and the Chrysler sped off. She in all humility yelled out at them “I’ll pray for you.”
Stunned at her response she immediately said “thank you Jesus.” It was not that long ago that she would have shouted back words as vulgar as theirs. Still, she was humiliated and angry. She could not quite understand how her words did not reflect what she was feeling, but they did reflect what was in her heart.
Many people read this scripture and ask how this can be possible. I have asked this question. It is a question which takes us to another Scripture found in Luke 18:27, “the things that are impossible with men are possible with God (KJV).”
Raeanne thought about this reaction of hers for several days, doing her best to analyze it. “Odd how we try to evaluate the good things we do.” Without being prideful Raeanne came to the assurance that she was walking close enough to Jesus, that she was being ruled by what was in her heart not her feelings. Slowly she began to understand that she was growing in “the Lord.” She was living close enough to Jesus to “be angry and sin not.” Close enough to reach out to her enemies in prayer. Close enough that her spiritual reflexes can over-ride her human reflexes.
As her head felt the comfort of her pillow that night she remembered to pray for the two young men and to give thanks.
Jesus help me to live each day in true humility and to lay down each night knowing all anger which might have entered into my life during the day has been given over to You. Thank You that I am not taking today’s anger into tomorrow. Amen.
