A Good Work

Most of us presume to think we are confident. In fact, being seen as confident by others is probably one of the things we pride ourselves most on. We want to be seen as being sure of ourselves, having no doubt, especially around our friends and in our everyday work environment. Being confident can cause us to sometimes step on toes and steam roll over others for the sake of getting ahead. Has the word “confident” taken on a worldly view instead of spiritual?

Confident, it is a good word. Or at least it sounds good, even impressive I would say. We tend to think of “confident” as in one self. How often do we say, I’m confident of this, whatever “this” might be. We should be confident, but not in a way that shows signs of pride. When one is confident, in the negative sense, it can bring about becoming proud and prideful in ourselves. It would be conceited to presume that accomplishments are achieved by our own doing. What a smug attitude to have; a bit self-righteous it seems. It’s what happens when we become confident in the wrong way of thinking.

The Holy Bible in the King James Version, Philippians chapter 1 verse 1: Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:

The Holy Bible in the King James Version, Philippians chapter 1, verse 6: Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

After reading these passages of scripture I said to myself, wow! Paul was confident in whom he was speaking of. His insightful words caused my heart to swell and my throat to clog up as I thought about his words. I reflected on the words “a good work” that God has an opportunity to do through all who accept the call to be used by him. I can’t begin to envision the miraculous things that God can accomplish, but we should be confident of it being “a good work.” We should be confident of the relationship that we have with him, and of our kinship to him as a believer. Yes, confident is a good word as long as it produces "a good work."
