Who am I man or boy? I am trying to decide it would be really helpful to have a cut off point, perhaps a right of passage. If I was an Indian brave I could go into the forest and kill a bear perhaps, but maybe not as the spider I saw last week had me running scared. I feel I need a ritual, I think the Jewish boy in my Biology class had one, but for me nothing, so I don’t know if I am you know, a man or a boy.

My parents don’t help, “keep your room tidy you’re not a child”

“Stand up for yourself be a man”

“No! You can’t go there” which is just about anywhere “You’re too young”

My feet keep growing, do they stop growing when you’re a man? Maybe that’s how I’ll know. There should be a book that tells you, you know if you’re a man or a boy. I could ask my Dad but he doesn’t know anything. I asked him about my voice when it went all deep and he said it was broke. Whatever!

This mirror is all cloudy, how come I can grow hair all over my body and not my face? Carlo Perugino has hair on his face Dad said it’s because he’s Latino or something, he isn’t, he’s Italian I told you my dad knows nothing. Mom is no better her response to everything is,

“Look in the bible, all your answers are in there” Whatever!

Still might be worth a look, because there was that guy whose brothers threw him into a pit and shut the lion’s mouths and then blew a trumpet and some walls fell down, oh after he killed the giant, I think, I don’t read it much, maybe I’ll take a look.

Wow! That’s interesting “Jesus Wept” I thought men weren’t supposed to cry.

I like this very much. Your story addresses a topic most boys think about and the last line points to a man any boy could emulate. Good story!

This is a question many of us continue to ask. You picked a particular point where this question comes into focus. Who an I just changes it's focus from whiskers at age 15 or 16 to who am I as retirement time arrives...am I my job or am I something more than that. Thanks for reminding us of the unasked questions of teens. The ones they are sure we're too stupid to answer. Good story. Proof read for smooth transitions between thoughts.
