I was a teen once. I know that this is contraire to the belief of my four children, but true. It seems like yesterday in my mind, however my body rebels to that notion. Never the less I am willing to share my experiences regardless of the giggles I may encounter.
“Yea, tell us a story of when you were a kid, dad. This outa’ be good.” My third child made this remark with a tone of arrogance. Oh well, I probably would have said the same thing to my dad if it wasn’t for the fear of his backhand.
I started out by saying that I was part of a historical moment in time. Bad move… I may have well said I was part of a hysterical moment in time. “What’s so funny; it’s true you know.”
“Go on dad.”
Of course I would go on. How could they not be impressed when they’ve heard one of my greatest stories about when I was a teen?
I began telling them about the time I saw The Beatles in person. It was 1965, Dodger Stadium, the grandstands were at full capacity, and a perfect sunny day. I was all decked out in my Beatle Boots, a Beatle haircut, and my best Beatle outfit.
I told them all about the concert, the opening act, and how the field was arrayed with two circus tents, (back to back,) with the stage in front of them both. But, the exciting part came next.
When the Beatles ended they scurried offstage into the first tent. Immediately the fans poured over the stadium walls to the field, and ran toward the tent. Police ran out to cut them off, and even went so far as to throw belly clubs to trip the wild kids. Just as the fans reached the front of the stage a long black limo tore out of the back tent, and raced toward the back gate. It was of no avail, because the tall wooden gates pulsed in and out from the crowds of kids that weren’t able to get inside. The crowds on the field were in hot pursuit of the limo from the rear, and the gate was about to burst open in front of them. The limo driver put the car in reverse, and spun it around in a quarter turn as they made their way toward the dugout. The four “mop tops” fled out of the car and ran for their lives. Some fans literally dove out of the stands to try and land on top of them, but they escaped.
I was caught up in the excitement along with a friend of mine. We surmised all the ways the Beatles could escape, and decided that it would be by a helicopter or ambulance.
We were already at the top seats of the stadium, and decided to look for a way upward. We found an open door that led to a stairway having a landing half way between each floor. We went up, but the doorway seemed locked.
We made our way down. We eventually found ourselves looking out of two glass doors leading outside. We saw the police had locked arms to hold the crowds back. It was then a most terrifying event took place. A girl in the crowd spotted us, and thinking we were the Beatles she hollered, “There they are!”
The police were no match for the fans. They pushed right by them, and as they approached the glass doors we took off. We heard the doors crash open behind us. We were only a flight in front of them as we ran for all we were worth back up the stairway.
To our amazement those locked doors popped open when we hit the safety bars, and we were now face the face with… that’s right… the cops.
He pointed down a long hallway, and as he held the doors closed he said, “This way to jail.”
Well, I must say that it only led to the outside, but we were relieved.
The looks on my teenager’s faces were not what I expected.
“Dad?”
“Yes?” I said.
“Who are, “The Beatles”?
I shook my head and thought… “I’m so old.”
