Form: Sestina
You have created the Heavens and earth,
Your omniscience is beyond our grasp.
First, You spoke of light to cover the land,
and fear erupted when You spoke of man.
I picture You in my thinking eye - huge;
when I call to You, my whole being cries.
I must listen when You answer my cries,
for Your flock is scattered over all earth.
Are all listening for Your voice – so huge –
at one time? I reach out, but cannot grasp
Your hand, the one that created sinful man
and all things great and small across the land.
From where You lived in a dry, thirsty land,
before you ascended, You heard the cries
of grief, strife, loneliness, echoed by man
in each corner of this troubled, sad earth.
Some worshiped earthly things, bright gold to grasp,
others built great mansions in gardens, huge
with lush flora, blue spruce and willows; huge
fertile fields to prosper fruitful land.
Did they not reach for You, to touch, to grasp
Your hand, to worship You with joyful cries
and songs that ring throughout this vernal earth?
Saints praise You in medleys written by man.
You ask that each one in the realm of man
accept You as Lord of their life; a huge
burden lifted before they leave this earth.
No matter in what far and distant land
each one dwells, You will hear their fervent cries
as they reach for Your nail-scarred hand to grasp
You are the dew of a thousand dawns, grasped
by lightening -- melodies bereft with man.
If I seek You in dark of night, my cries
reaching, then cast into the Jordan’s huge
expanse – You will hear me in foreign lands,
stand with me wherever I bide on earth.
In all earth, Your power is near to grasp
in fertile lands or barren plains tilled by man,
in huge cities, You hear our urgent cries.
