‘Tis drab as drab could be.
And on the collar, Jesus wrote
It’s name: “Humility.”
It warms my heart if I grow cold.
It keeps out all my pride.
And angry words and boasting bold
Are buttoned up inside.
I wear it when I’m unaware;
When I don’t think of Me!
But when I start to think it’s there,
It’s nowhere I can see!
I wear it round the house a lot.
My kids can always tell
If it is on; but if it’s not…
Man! Can they give me hell!
My wife and I, we never fight,
We just get quite intense.
What right has she to be so right?
It just does not make sense!
When I get agro, she’s so kind.
My flesh, it has to die!
In my coat pockets, there I find
A piece of Humble Pie.
At work I wore it when, at lunch,
I faced a grouchy boss.
I had to roll with every punch
And get off my high hoss.
My workmates scoff: “This Christian dude,
A humble coat he wears!
Let’s put hot chili in his food
And then see if he swears!”
I wore it to the working bee
That they had on at church.
They did not call “It’s Morning Tea!”
And left me in the lurch!
I think I’ve hit the mark, but miss!
It’s kind of like a ghost!
Of all the Christ-like virtues, this
Can frustrate me the most!
Yet though elusive it may be,
It flows through many a story.
Perhaps one day the world will see
This radiant cloak of glory.
“….. and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5 KJV)
