Just ASK God Devotionals*
“You can tell each tree by its fruit.” Matthew 7:20 (NIV)
Ask: Lord, how do I let the world know I am yours? How do I change my heart?
Seek: We are known by our fruit. God made each of us different. Like different types of trees each of us is different, bearing fruit that distinguishes us from each other. After all, variety is the spice of life. Whether a tree bears peaches or apples or bananas doesn’t matter. What matters is that the fruit is edible and not insect-infested or disease-ridden.
So too it is with the fruit we bear. The quality of our fruit depends on the quality of all that we take in, namely input from the world and input from God. We choose the form of that input, be it books, television, other people or direct communion with Jesus. We are what we dwell upon.
The old adage of “garbage in, garbage out” is extremely appropriate as it relates to who we are or will become. At the same time, “Jesus in, Jesus out” is how we bear fruit worth producing—namely love, forgiveness, mercy and grace. He is our living water. When we let him into our hearts, the overflow is manifested in our words, thoughts and deeds.
Bear good fruit today by drinking in his words of life and love.
Knock: Lord, guide me in the way you want me to be. I invite you to make the changes in my heart necessary for me to bear good fruit. Let me drink of your water. In Jesus’ holy name. Amen.
