My family and I were enjoying our Sunday together in the contemporary worship
service at church. Two large screens are mounted on the front wall for displaying
words to the praise songs we sing or scriptures that pertain to the sermon. With a cue from either the praise band leader or the minister, we know when to look at the screen
to follow along. We had grown accustomed to this service “flow” and knew what to expect.
On this particular Sunday, something out of the ordinary flashed on the screen at an
“unintroduced” cue time. A rectangular box kept appearing, disappearing and reappearing which read, “Check the Air Flow”. I kind of snickered and nudged
my husband as I pointed to the screens. This must have signaled some kind
of message to whoever was in charge of the air temperature, but had mistakenly
been beamed up for the congregations’ perusal. The congregation couldn’t help
but read and re-read this unexpected message with amusement.
Further in the service, our pastor conducted our monthly communion. I love the
way we take a piece of bread and dip it into the communal chalice of
grape juice, go up to the railing, kneel and pray as we reflect on Christ’s
sacrifice and how that affects our lives personally. This act of kneeling at
the railing really puts my heart in a humble, reverent attitude. More powerful
still is kneeling together with my husband and three sons. It doesn’t get any
closer to heaven than that!
As I began to thank God for what Christ’s sacrifice meant to me, I also prayed that
His precious blood would wash me clean from any recent sins I had committed.
Then the phrase, “Check the air flow” flashed through the screen of my mind. My
mind followed along: “Ok, Lord, check my air flow. Clear up any pollution that is blocking Your Life from flowing through me.” Wow. Isn’t it cool how God can use anything as an altar of worship to bring our thoughts back to Him? Even and especially things that are unplanned “mistakes” by man? I believe God introduces these “cues”
regularly-we just need our eyes open to read those unexpected messages flashed
on the screen of His world.
Examine me, GOD, from head to foot, order your battery of tests. Make sure I'm fit
inside and out so I never lose sight of your love, but keep in step with you,
never missing a beat. Psalm 26:2-3 (The Message)
