TITLE: Promises
By Joann McDonald

The pain and reality of abandonment
Beyond comprehension but I must grasp
Intolerable agonies will the emptiness ever relent?
Soothe these gaping wounds clenching deep within
Where is my help and where is my hope I cry
My shattered world fades into ruin.

Betrayal has ripped my heart from its very abode
Never to return I fear
Through the tears I sense a faint voice
My sobs ceasing as I strain to hear
Inclining my ear oh please let me conceive
Tender words someone is speaking.

Clearer still and Iím so unsure
Can you mean these wonderful things for me?
Itís been so long since I have believed
In promises can I trust?

I hear you say you will love me forever
I donít know what that means
In my life everyone turns away
No one has ever stayed
How can I believe?

What is love unending or a relationship of permanence
This covenant that you are promising
Knowing only temporary and conditional love
I cannot comprehend what you bring.

Can this justice you speak of be upheld
Even in my neglected and abused heart?
For I have longed for fair treatment, reward and honor
Only to be taken advantaged of once more.
If you know my heart cries and your appeal is to my weakness
Then take these promises away.
For I have grown cold to hope am vanquished
I cannot believe any more lies today.

With your faithfulness you want to bring stability to my life?
You say that your love is steady, loyal and unfeigned
Peace, joy and abundance
Who can ascertain?
No one gives in completeness something is always withheld
How do I trust or believe
In something I have never known?

You are promising to have compassion and mercy on me
This I have never heard
For who I am is not always who I want to be
You say you love me just the same?
I find that your tender love and affections
Are stirring my calloused heart.

Seeing you for the first time and the depth of your unfailing love
I am beginning to understand just who you are
Your name is wonderful, counselor and prince of peace
The one who embraces my very soul
You are the lover who never leaves
And have captured this torn and ragged heart

Secure for me a future
Happiness, love, prosperity
Let me see your mighty arm bring healing
For I will take hold of your hand
Let you lead me through these days
I am convinced of your word to me
I know that you mean what you say

You have ravished my heart and brought life once again
Thinking it not attainable I could not even aspire
To find this pure and satisfying love
The journey of my hearts desire
I now know that with you all things are possible
I find that I do believe
A love that is holy a God that is real
And the divine promises I now receive.

Awakened to your love and the wonders of your romance
Your beauty has showered this once hopeless life
Swirling and dancing the dance that lovers dance
Your presence envelops my very being.

With your gentle ways and faithful love
No longer do I fear
That I will ever be abandoned
Or alone in this world
For I know that you are unceasingly near.

ďI will betroth you to Me forever;
Yes, I will betroth you to Me
In righteousness and justice,
In loving kindness and mercy;
I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,
And you shall know the Lord.Ē
Hosea 2:19-20

I don't usually identify with prose like this. But I read this to the end and it is very good. It's hard to believe that this is in level one.

This is well written and I understood it in my heart. I think once you have felt what it is to have promises broken you can fully relate. Thank you for sharing it with us!

Very intense and heartfelt. Your longing and awe are clearly expressed. Keep writing!

Beautifully written. What a nice heartfelt elaboration on the Song of Solomon verse at the end.

You gave me goosebumps, really! Great writing means that the reader can feel what you put into words, and you accomplished that so incredibly well! It's also about being honest about what you feel, and I could feel the love and pain that went into this. Excellent work!

This is absolutely, wonderful! Great entry!

This is beautiful! So deep and honestly written. I really liked the tone and feel of it. A few verses seemed a tad too long, maybe they needed to be two lines instead of one? Just a thought, otherwise, very well done! ^_^

This is beautiful, so vulnerable and lovely. Well done!
