We know that we serve a mighty God. A loving God. A God of mercy, compassion and forgiveness. We also know that it is possible to anger our Heavenly Father or to grieve His heart. But how often do we think of our Lord as having a sense of humour?
I believe that God’s sense of humour is illustrated in this story which took place many years ago.
The movie ‘Jaws’ had just hit the big screen and people were understandably a little nervous about the dangers lurking in the deep. Nevertheless, one fine Sunday morning (when the weather was really rather too glorious to waste sitting in church) people flocked to the beach in droves.
My husband, Jacques, (which happens to rhyme with ‘shark’) was surfing, as usual, when a friend that he had not seen for some time walked onto the beach and spotted him.
“Jacques!” yelled this fellow, waving his arms excitedly. “Jacques!”
Imagine his astonishment when pandemonium broke loose and within minutes the beach was deserted, with everyone peering anxiously out to sea looking for the shark!
Sad to say no one seemed to be in too much of a hurry to go back into the water. Perhaps they should rather have gone to church.
I like to think that God enjoyed the joke.
