Did they understand? Of course not or they wouldn’t have been doing that, but my mind DID understand. I worked hard to remove those foul words from my mind while I pulled weeds from the flower bed. I knew as soon as I went back into the house that I would need to replace those crude thoughts with worship and praise music. I had to pull the weeds in my mind quickly, before they sunk in and developed roots.
It is indeed a great mystery that the enemy has kept stealthily shrouded from society. Our minds, the inner workings of our heart and brain, are amazingly complex and capable of far more than we can imagine. God’s perfect computer, the mind records everything, even things we don’t realize we are hearing, seeing, feeling, and smelling. A moment of ecstasy or the childish thrill of dishonesty is recorded permanently in our brains with incredible detail. These grand memory banks in our skulls don’t miss a thing and our hearts receive and interpret it all through our filters of experience, age and personality.
Sometimes those recordings come up when we want them to but other times they emerge unannounced, flailing themselves around in our hearts with renewed vigor, like a hunger dragon in search of fresh meat. The enemy knows the heart of man and uses this knowledge against us. Neither sleeping or expiring in our lifetimes, he and his minions remember those lurid moments in our BC days and bring up out of the pit to taunt us. Even the words of my own mouth he uses against me. My black and blue thumbnail reminds me of a recent curse slipping through my lips like that of a motorcycle biker.
Oh Lord, the things I would like to remove from my past and my mind. Then I am reminded, again, of all that I have been redeemed from and His mercies that are new every morning. I have been freed from my past and I am a new creation in Christ. The old things ARE passing away and the new things are taking root and becoming my “reality,” day by day.
We must guard our minds like the invaluable vaults they are. Protect your heart by first protecting your ears.
My determination to use my God-given computer for His Glory is strengthened as I think about the painters and what their minds and lives must be like. How can a man come home to his wife and children and speak kind, loving words to them when all his heart has heard that day are foul words and ridicule? Where in his soul can he find love and compassion to give to his son struggling with homework when his mind is full of nothing but Howard Stern and Radio Raunch?
A computer user would never deliberately load a destructive virus onto his hard drive yet our minds are barraged with garbage and destruction all day long unless we take action otherwise.
What music and shows do you listen to daily? What material do you like to read? Do you monitor not just what comes out of your own mouth but also what you let into your ears? Due to the church’s awareness of pornography addiction, most avoid the nudie magazines and X-rated TV shows, but what about the romance novels or the R-rated, mostly naked embraces on that action movie on your home entertainment center? I was able to look away before my eyes took in what was meant to be just between a husband and wife, but my mind continued to replay the actor’s lines for weeks after that.
The initials “WWJD” portrait a scene in my mind of Jesus but he is not even sitting in my living room. He left the room when I put in that movie. No condemnation, just a lack of His Presence.
