Picklenose and Johnny’s Picnic Trouble
Johnny jumped up from his bed as the sun beamed into the room through the half closed curtains. “Picklenose”, Johnny yelled as he jumped on his six year old brother who was sleeping in a bed next to him. “It’s time to get up and start packing for our picnic.”
Picklenose jumped up and ran to his dresser. “Get dressed as fast as you can and lets get packed,” Johnny said, “and hurry.”
Running down the stairs the boys made a beeline for the kitchen. Their mommy had packed some peanut butter sandwiches for them and had baked them peanut butter cookies.
“Picklenose grab your backpack,” Johnny ordered, “ We have more to take then mine can hold.”
“O.K. Johnny, “ Picklenose said, “I have my flashlight, sandbox shovel, and a camera.”
“Why are you bringing a camera Picklenose you don’t have any film?” Johnny said.
“I know, but I can pretend can’t I, I mean you are pretending you are some great explorer,” Picklenose replied.
As Picklenose and Johnny started to walk through the backyard and towards the woods the grass was still wet with the morning dew. The sun was bright and warm and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.
“How much farther will it be,” Picklenose asked? “Not far,” Johnny replied, “see those trees, we will picnic there and hike and explore.” Pickle nose looked off in the distance it was so exciting he thought they must be a hundred miles from home.
After what seemed to be a long walk for Picklenose they had finally made it to their picnic site. Picklenose and Johnny both took off their backpacks and Johnny spread out a blanket on the ground.
Picklenose was placing the peanut butter sandwiches and peanut butter cookies out on the blanket he heard a noise in the woods behind him.
“ What was that,” Picklenose ask?
“What was what,” Johnny asked?
“A noise coming from the woods, Picklenose said nervously.
“ You have been watching too many scary cartoons Picklenose, there isn’t anything in those woods,” Johnny said.
“I know there is something in there,” Pickle nose said as he pointed to the thicket that covered most of the ground.
“Don’t be a scaredy cat Picklenose, grab your water and we can start hiking,” Johnny said.
“I don’t know Johnny what if there is a lion or something in the woods, Picklenose asked?
“Don’t be silly,” Johnny said, “there aren’t any lions in our woods.”
Picklenose and Johnny started out on their hike even though Picklenose didn’t like the idea. They went very deep in the woods and Picklenose was scared. Johnny decided that their hike was over and it was time to head back and eat.
As they made there way out of the woods Picklenose was the first to see that their campsite had been torn up.
“Johnny what happened to our peanut butter sandwiches and,” in mid-sentence Johnny interrupted Picklenose, “I don’t know but lets get out of here, whatever ate our sandwiches and cookies and messed up Mommy’s blanket is still over there in the bush.” Johnny screamed to Picklenose. Johnny saw something stick its head out of the woods.
“Bear,” Johnny yelled, “Run!”
Both boys ran home as fast as they could into their mother’s arms as she was in the yard hanging out clothes.
“What is the matter with you two,” their Mommy asked? “You look like you saw a monster,” she said.
“Not a monster Mommy, but a bear,” Picklenose said. “A bear that ate our peanut butter sandwiches and our peanut butter cookies.”
“ A bear in our woods,” Mommy asked?
“Yes Mommy a bear in our woods and it almost ate us,” Johnny added.
“I don’t think there are any bears in our woods,” Mommy said, but I do think you two have to go in and get washed up for lunch.”
“But Mommy we saw it, a big brown bear that liked to eat our peanut butter sandwiches,” Johnny said.
“ Don’t be silly Johnny there aren’t any bears in our woods,” Mommy said.
“But Mommy,” Picklenose said we saw it, big and brown and had peanut butter on its lips and paws.”
“Well boys it looks like we have a peanut butter bear that lives in our woods,” Mommy said, “Go get washed up for lunch and we will talk about this mystery while we eat.”
