The Lost Art
Sewing is a lost art.
No one sews anymore.
I remember wearing my older brother’s mended hand-me-downs as a major part of my limited childhood wardrobe. My mother would spend time each evening sewing new dresses for my little sister as well as repairing socks, shirts, and worn knees in our jeans for us boys.
Sewing used to be a common skill that was needed in every home. Socks always need repair, buttons need to be reattached, pants let in and out, seams tightened, and hems taken out. Sewing was considered a necessary skill for all young men and ladies during their single life and the skill was utilized in the home after marriage.
Sewing consists of creating new clothing as well as repair. To begin making a new article of clothing a person needs enough cloth and a pattern. The cloth is cut according to the pattern and the one wielding the needle must attach the variously shaped pieces of cloth to make an article of clothing.
Today, when we do repair clothing we take it to the dry cleaners and our new dress is bought at the wholesale and retail outlets with the idea that when it is faded, torn, or frayed, it is discarded to be replaced from the same clothing shop without a thought to repair.
I am reminded of how God not only creates new clothing, but creates the cotton, gin, and loom that go into each new frock or suit. I am humbled by the thought of His majesty and power whenever I think of my own creativity and ingenuity. His children are the best dressed. He repairs injured egos, damaged bodies, and wounded spirits with the same thoughtfulness and care that my mother always had for our needs. “For God so loved the world…”
