I took a few steps and put my soapbox back. It wasn’t time. Oh my story was still good – and should be heard in fact – yet I knew somehow that I wasn’t the one to deliver it.
Sunday rolled around and I went to church. I heard a story there about fishing. I listened with a smug smile (after all I didn’t have my entry for Faithwriters yet).
The gist of the story was this: An old time Florida fisherman caught lots of fish. He did it illegally. He used dynamite. The local game warden decided to check it out and planned a fishing trip with the old timer. The trip started out well and the two talked as they neared their fishing spot. The old time fisherman reached down and fiddled with something near his seat. He brought up a stick of dynamite and lit it.
The game warden sighed and said “Charlie, what are you doing? You know that’s illegal.”
Charlie handed the dynamite to the game warden and replied “Are you gonna talk or fish?”
I’m still unsure as to how this story fit into the sermon…but it did speak to me. When Jesus called His disciples some of them were fisherman. As far as I know they were legitimate and used nets. Jesus told them He would make them fishers of men.
If I look at myself in that arena, I see that if I were a fisher of men, I would be the type who uses dynamite. Granted I would catch a lot of fish, but how many would be dead or wounded? Sounds pretty pathetic if you take God out of the picture. BUT He is in the picture and He knows that when it comes to fishing, it is best if I am simply just gone…
It is He who commands my soapbox. Good thing!
