"Gone Fishing" is a very familiar term to me. It graces the three-dimentional picture above my fireplace; it's on the front licence plate of my husband's pick-up; and it's often written on the message magnet on the fridge. It's also produced a mounted twenty-five pound Pike in the family room. Fishing is my husband's passion! He claims "the worst day of fishing is better than the best day of work!"
He is not a fair-weather fisherman. He fishes in all seasons. He may be dressed like an Eskimo or a deck-hand in a yellow slicker-all in the name of fishing!
Fishing allows my husband to be the hands-on-man he is. His fishing kit contains pliers to take out hooks; snippers to cut line; a weigh-scale to weigh the fish; a ruler to measure the length; and a filleting knife to filet the catch along with hundreds of colored hooks of every type and size. "You can never have enough hooks or accessories" according to him.
"Going Fishing" causes him to count sleeps; to eat soup for supper without complaint when he doesn't catch any fish; to have some new fish stories to tell everytime he goes.
My husband has many "fishing buddies", but his favorites are his four sons. I'm guessing that's because he trained them to be as passionate about fishing as he is!
Last week my husband retired and I gave him a retirement present to match his passion. An underwater camera he has dubbed "Scout" accompanies him now as he fishes the streams, rivers and lakes of Northern Saskatchewan and Central Alberta. C
