Make A Difference

My mother was an extremely patient woman. I loved to read and from a young age and would follow her around the house with a book in my hands. As the years passed, there were always words I could not pronounce. Not wanting to wait an extra minute, I would say, “Mom, how do you say this word?” She would stop cooking, sewing or cleaning and clearly tell me the correct pronunciation. Years later, as my family drove from our home in the Boston area to Washington, DC for a summer vacation, I would sit quietly in the back seat with a book in my lap. My sisters and parents wondered how I could ride for hours on end without getting carsick. It was easy because my love for reading never ended!

In our world today, reading is an absolute necessity. Teenagers use cell phones and text messaging more than their textbooks. If you do not have an email account, you are not up with the times. When applying for a job, you must be able to read the application; you would not want to put your father’s name in place of your mother’s name. Trying to put a toy or small piece of furniture together is hard enough when following instructions; it is impossible if you cannot read the instructions. Reading the daily newspaper or weekly newsmagazine enables a person to keep up with current affairs or to begin a new hobby.

In today’s world, if a young person only has a high school education, the only job they can anticipate is a low-paying one. With a college education, a person has the opportunity to advance further in the career of their choice. The ability to read enables us to advance further in life and to make a difference in the lives of others. As we read, our knowledge grows, not only of certain subjects, but of peoples and cultures as well. With knowledge comes understanding, with understanding comes peace and with peace comes love - love for one another.

Your last line is quite profound - with knowledge comes understanding...may we always use our reading to grow in character as well as for enjoyment
