Once upon a sunshine day
Ava's dollies came to play.
Dressed in skirts blue-green and red,
Followed Ava when she led...

To the creek, the knoll, the tree,
Singing songs so happily.
Hide and seek in bushes thick,
Count to three and run so quick!

China dishes on a spread.
Flower chains on each small head.
Mem'ries aching to be born
On a three year childhood morn.

Eat the cookies, drink sweet tea,
Now play jumping jacks, and see
All the clothes hung on the line,
Wading dollies look so fine.

Scamper up stout tree of life,
Here's the fall; but there's no strife.
Dirty hands, feet and face...
Time for tender quiet place.

Mama comes with basket deep
Says "Its time for all to sleep."
Gathers up each droopy one,
Later they may have more fun.

Ava tucked in covers sweet.
Squeeze in dollies head to feet.
Pull the sheet up to each chin,
Here's where deep love does begin.

No cross words at scuff marked shoes.
Tangled hair is youngster dues.
Watch the dreams roll in the mind.
Mama's words are soft and kind.

"Sleep my bear, my lamb, my dove.
Angels guard you from above.
Tasks are many, years seem few
To imprint deep love on you."

Clean your room, eat all your peas,
Now is not the time for these.
This the hour of sweet caress,
No worry and no distress.

On the stove something simmers.
Eyes have idea glimmers.
After nap we'll take a stroll
Back to yonder grassy knoll.

Pack a lunch of buns and ade.
Roll around in flowered glade.
Giggle with this little miss,
Steal a hug and one quick kiss.

Dollies too will come along,
Pulled in box 'cause Ava's strong.
On the hill pretend to be
Bees, bugs, ponies, birds we see.

We may march and trot away;
Flap our wings, whistle today.
Hide in grasses nine feet tall;
Balance-walk on fieldstone wall.

Work can wait but not the youth
Such we grownups know as truth!
Sunshine days and hours of play
Quickly go their merry way.

Hello Noreen. This poem deserved so many more comments. It certainly deserved it's place in the Editor's Choice.

The book this entry will appear in is being edited by me now, and I've just reached "Merry Way." Noreen, I had to stop and leave a quick comment to tell you how much this poem touched my heart tonight. It filled me with nostalgia--both for my own childhood and for that of my children (now 22 and 20). It brought tears to my eyes.

You painted the picture of this wonderful childhood day so beautifully. The introduction of the mother's loving response was exactly right. This was glorious!

With love, Deb (Challenge Coordinator and Editor, FaithWriters' Magazine)
