The storm rages around us. The waves of the angry sea crash against our resolve to persevere. We seek relief from the hardships of life which try to drown us with despair. Instead, we sink deeper into dependence upon our idols to release the pain of our circumstances – alcohol, drugs, the Internet, even some seemingly worthwhile diversion. The result is bondage and the storm continues to intensify.
At the last moment before falling into the abyss, we surrender and call out for rescue.
“Please Jesus, save me, I’m drowning. I’m finally ready to grab hold of the life preserver you’ve been offering me for years.”
Within a flash, quicker than lightning crackling on the water’s surface, the Right Hand from Heaven reaches down and releases us from death’s grip. The next thing we know we are alongside the Master Himself inside the safety of His boat. It’s the same boat we’ve seen only from a distance, never realizing how easy it was to come aboard.
The storm still rages on the seas. But the tighter we take hold of His strong right hand, the safer we are and the weaker the waves appear.
He is always in the boat with us, no matter how severe the storm is around us. The storms never disappear, but He alone is able to calm them. When we allow Him to be who He is in our storm, He will protect us and guard our life with a fierce faithfulness.
Dear Lord, thank you that you have saved my life from eternal destruction. Though trials will not entirely disappear, please increase my faith to trust in Your strength to calm the storm. Open my eyes to see Your great works, as the disciples did when they found themselves in the raging sea. Thank you for being my refuge in the storm and guiding me to safety.
In Jesus name.
