Abigail, traced her finger along the wood of the landing. She was doing what she had been told, to sit quietly on the piers edge and wait for her father. Looking out occasionally she could see her father’s agile body on the board paddling into the ocean and then coming back into the beach standing on the surfboard propelled by the oceans current. Then he jumped off the board and into the water. The beauty of it, was a pattern she could watch forever. There were other “surfers” but her father was the only one that interested her.
The sun casting a shadow over her, made her look up to see a woman standing over her with a concerned look on her face. “Abigail, did your father leave you here again?”
“Yes ma’am, he told me to watch him for a little bit and then we can go get ice cream!”
The girl sputtered out in an enthusiastic but cautious voice. The people here did not like daddy leaving her alone on the pier. She never was a problem, so most people left her alone.
Humming to herself, she went back to the tracing of the wood. Looking out at the water,
She could not see her father. Then, he was there, lying on top of his board, face down.
While another surfer was pushing him into shore. Two lifeguards met them in the water and brought father to the shore. Abigail’s heart raced fast, as she watched the lifeguards
kneel over her father.
