Jesus said, whoever would save his life, would surely lose it; whoever would lose his life would surely gain it.
What an oxymoron I must admit.
As we release our need to guard our lives, they are miraculously restored unto us. So many things hold us back from sheer surrender. We constantly feel like if we lose control, we will be lost forever without a trace of mere existence.
The idea here is to not guard our lives ourselves, but to put our lives in the hands of almighty God, allowing Him to do with them as He sees fit. Often His ways are not our ways, but we must let go in order to gain anything in the end, including eternal life.
Guarding our lives shows little trust in our Father. It means we are worthy of protecting ourselves, we can do it better than God and need not His help in our lives. It is like a slap in Jesus' face.
We could not guard our lives and still save them. We had to let them go to be bought back with a high price that no one but our Savior, Jesus Christ, could afford to pay.
As God is our lifeguard, we realize how often the waves of life would have swallowed us up in a single swoop had we not let Jesus save us. With God as our lifeguard, we know we will never drown. For He is guarding our lives all the time, through thick and through thin, in darkness and in splendor. The lifeguard of our lives need to be Jesus. He is our anchor that can withstand the storms of the seas like no other.
There need be only one lifeguard. He is able and willing to rescue us and lift us to higher ground. Almighty God, precious Jesus - the lifeguard of our soul and flesh.
