Crash! The salty air reverberates with the thunder of the breakers. For millennia, the water has pounded upon the shore, breaking down solid rock to tiny little grains of sand. The ocean is a thing of beauty and yet contains an awesome destructive power. A plaything for surfers and swimmers, a source of life for sailors and fishermen, in an instant, the ocean becomes a thief of life itself. The pretty little white caps rise up at the head of a huge wave. A surfer riding the wave experiences exhilaration while anything within the wave is doomed to destruction as it pounds upon the shore, leaving a trail of debris in its wake.
For millennia, kingdoms of the earth have come and gone, risen and waned, majestic yet too often destructive, at times destroying even life itself. Blond, blue-eyed Vikings sailed the mighty seas, expanding their kingdom, leaving the impact of their language and their genes wherever they stayed, but have long since withdrawn to their rocky outcrop of land. The magnificent black African chiefs have led their peoples to become a mighty force, sometimes clashing tragically with one another, resulting in total destruction and tragedy in the same way as a collision of the earth’s plates under the mighty ocean instigates a tsunami. The fat pale King Henry VIII was the little white head of water atop the swell of a nation which was active in expanding its shores, but the turmoil within that wave was severe indeed. The black-haired yellow-skinned wave of China has waxed and waned many times, sometimes with a magnificent emperor as that little breaker atop the swell, other times the people placing one of their own atop the wave, each person holding his little red book, proudly marching to prosperity and equality. That wave, too, has waned, but only to change form and again is rising up to form a mighty power. Czars, emperors, presidents, prime ministers, kings, queens, chiefs and priests – all have taken their turn at being that little head of white water ahead of a powerful wave that crashes upon the beach and withdraws again.
The ocean may be powerful but its days are limited. One day, there will be “no longer any sea”, but only the “river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Revelation 21:1, 22:1 NIV). The nations will be there, but no longer as powerful destructive waves, with various fallen members of humanity as those little white heads leading the massive force into a powerful wave. Instead, the only sea will be the sea of faces praising God and Jesus.
“There was … a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb…. And they cried out in a loud voice: “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb”.” (Revelation 7:9a, 10 NIV)
Heads which are black, brown, red, blond, white, frizzy, straight or wavy; eyes which are brown, blue, hazel, green or grey; faces which are brown, yellow and white – all will be raised together, gazing upon the Son of God, voices raised in worship, a magnificent multicoloured sea of humanity. The tumult of history will be no more, the destruction of the mighty ocean only a memory. Instead, we will stand with our brothers and sisters from every generation of people that have lived on this earth, people from every tribe, nation, language and cultural background, worshiping the One who sits on the throne, and the Lamb. “For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; he will lead them to springs of living water. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” (Revelation 7:17 NIV)
Come quickly Lord Jesus.
