Leadership, I am sure if we gathered all the books that had been written on this subject, it might take a warehouse to hold them all. After all in almost every area of life people are looking for someone, anyone that can fill the role of a leader. In business people that have the ability to lead a company to the top of the business world are the ones who receive the top salaries, and promotions. In sports a leader, that one player that the other members of the team look to for strength when the chips are down, is what every coach, or manager looks for. Even in Christian organizations, such as churches, pastors are searching for someone to be the leader, to be the one out front, leading in some way, in some area of Christian service.
But what makes a leader, if we were to list the qualifications for leadership, things like the ability to take charge, planning, organizational skills, the power to persuade others, influence, a dynamic personality, the one who stands out from the rest. All these things and many more might be included in our list. Titles such as President, CEO, CFO, Chairman of the Board are used in business to identify leaders of industry. Team Captain is the most popular and often used title in the area of sports in association with leadership. Even in Church, Bishop, Deacon, Superintendent or other such titles are used to express a person in a leadership role. And in all these offices, titles, talents, skills is included the idea of success.
So with all this information that we have before us to identify a real leader, how does Christ measure up? Well to start with, He did not head up any large corporations, no titles, no job related perks such as a big car to drive, no stock, no incentive bonuses, no hundred dollar hand made suits. No multi million dollar contract, no signing bonus, no up front money, no guaranteed contract, no non trade clause. In fact he did not have a parsonage to live in, no salary, as for as we know only one change of clothes, in fact by His own words He did not even have a place to lay His Head. When He wanted to preach to the crowds that followed Him, He had to borrow a fisherman’s boat. He either ate at one of His disciple’s house, such as Peter, or at some friend’s house like Lazarus and His sisters, Mary and Martha. To pay tax, He sent Peter to catch a fish, and He had to borrow a donkey to ride on, an upper room to eat His last meal on Earth, and a garden to pray in on His last night before He suffered and died on a cross as a criminal and trader. On top of all this He told those who followed Him that they too would suffer and some would even die for following such a leader as Him. And yet the world has never been able to produce another leader His equal.
