I sit and stare at my cell phone, at the text message staring back at me. My thought is, “Here she goes again…” Why won’t she just stand in faith and trust the Lord! She is off to another party... My precious friend – such a great sense of humor, witty personality, and so much potential – and it is all being thrown away for drugs, alcohol and relationships sure to leave her a little lower, a little farther from the One who truly loves her, a little closer to the fires that will never stop burning.
I can’t just sit here, live my life and not try again. Try to put out the fire that the enemy is kindling so he may devour her… I type a message. This is my attempt, with Christ by my side, to quench the fires of the enemy with the truth of the One who gives the water which causes us to thirst no more.
One simple question is all I am going to ask her. “Is God dead?” She doesn’t respond for quite awhile… Finally my phone rings a too-happy tune… There she is! The reply is less than satisfactory – “What? Are you trying to get me to think or something?”
Yes, I am. Trying to get you to think about life, death, heaven and hell. Trying to get you to think about the fact that you are playing with fire. Trying to get you to acknowledge the God above whom you once said you served. Is He still here? Is He still real? Than you own Him a response – a reverent response.
Weeks pass… She has been coming back to church. She even went forward and prayed seriously for her soul. Maybe this it, Lord! Maybe this is the time she will run from the sin that blinds, that tears and that burns. I will be her firefighter as long as it takes…
