I am not a fire-starter,
Called by some a “fire bug,”
But I am a fire-fighter;
I’m a human fireplug.
I don’t fight fires actual,
But the fires of the heart
Like the flames of pride and envy
That are sent by Satan’s dart.
I stifle hateful words to say
From anger that’s aflame;
I call for help to fight the fire
In Jesus’ precious name.
A fire-keeper am I, too,
To stoke the embers glowing
Of joy and peace and thankfulness
That in my heart are growing.
By prayer and Bible study,
My heart’s spark is getting stronger
Till deeds of kindness will appear
And my patience will last longer.
My life becomes a candle
Where the little light will grow
Till others all around me
Then my Savior’s love will know.
But whether fire-fighter,
Fire-keeper might I be,
I do not do my work alone;
God in Spirit’s guiding me.
