The gardener smiles,
And kneels,
And tends the ground,
Watchful of his children.
To every plant
He offers food;
To every life
He offers light.
Naught that lives
In this rich soil
Is given the name of 'weed'.
Each plant is good,
And granted to grow,
To prosper or crowd,
Or to wilt,
By its choice.
Loved are the plants
That flourish here,
Lilies spreading down along the fence,
Dandelions dancing across the hill,
Crabgrass pushing,
Eager for more.
Wondrous are they,
So many beloved,
But none preferred,
Except
There is one prize,
A most beloved bloom.
It lives in the
Heart
Of the garden.
A rose;
The One Who,
With thorns severe,
Shed red.
And I,
Lily-pure by the rose's will,
Sheltered under mighty oak-tree limbs,
Merely grass,
Humble grass,
Hide in among the stones,
Of no account
To all but He Who tends the earth.
