Alejandra: Why did she do it?

Carmina: She wasn’t that big.

Bonita: She had such a pretty face.

Alejandra: She was a beautiful person.

Carmina: I don’t know how she talked her husband into it.

Bonita: I heard it cost $10,000.

Alejandra: That money could have gone to her kids’ education.

Carmina: Or daycare. Miguel’s a single dad now. How’s he going to take care of those kids on his own?

Alejandra: It is so not worth it.

Bonita: I considered it once.

Carmina: Really?

Bonita: Just for my nose.

Alejandra: What’s wrong with your nose?

Bonita: I always hated my nose.

Carmina: We all hate something.

Bonita: But not that much… Not to die for.

Alejandra: Why did she risk it? Just so she could wear a bikini again?

Bonita: I heard they’re burying her in it, her new bikini, under her clothes.

Carmina: Oh… It’s just so sad, such a waste…

Alejandra: It didn’t have to happen.

Carmina: It should never have happened.

Alejandra: She always said there was a thin woman inside her, waiting to break out.

Bonita: She broke out all right.

Carmina: She wanted her before-kids body back.

Alejandra: You can’t ever go back, not really.

Carmina: I think plastic surgery actually hurts self-esteem.

Bonita: They talked her into doing her hips, too, while they were at it. Can you believe it?

Alejandra: I can see doing it for burn victims or someone like that.

Carmina: Yeah, they might actually need it.

Alejandra: But not for regular people… certainly not our poor Esmeralda.

Carmina: Why does society put so much value on looks?

Bonita: Even boys have body image issues nowadays.

Alejandra: I blame it on the media.

Bonita: Who can escape the media?

Carmina: Oh, I just feel so bad for her kids.

Alejandra: I know… those poor kids. A heavy mama is much better than no mama!

Carmina: Why couldn’t she have seen herself and accepted herself as Jesus did?

I like the concept, but a little insight into how she died would have been nice. Did she die during surgery? Did she commit suicide because she still wasn't "thin enough?" Perhaps it's something you wanted to be left up to the reader, and wanted it to be a mystery, but a few more clues would have been great. A unique approach to this topic.

Good title, and your dialogue was very good indeed. Well done.

A very impacting article. The last line is the answer to it all.
