“Harold, I’ve heard some wild stuff in my time, but I think a gorilla prophet telling you that you need to buy a plot of land is just about the silliest thing I’ve ever heard,” Jimmy replied, raising his eyebrows as high as possible. He was sure his best friend had swallowed too much cough medicine the night before his prophetic dream.
“It ain’t about the land, Jimmy. It’s about the homeless shelter the gorilla told me to build. That’s what I’ve got to do.”
“Harold, how much money do you have to your name?”
“Countin’ the change in my junk drawer, probably about 25 dollars.”
“Last I heard, three acres was costing a bit more ‘en 25 dollars.”
“Yeah, I know, but the gorilla said I shouldn’t worry ‘bout the money.”
“So where did the gorilla tell you to get the building supplies?”
“Duh, he didn’t.”
“I can’t believe we are even talking about this.”
“Yep, the gorilla said nobody would believe me; said I shouldn’t tell anyone about him.”
“So why on earth did you tell me about him?”
“Cause you’re my best friend, Jimmy. I ain’t lettin’ no gorilla come between me and my best friend. I had to tell you about him.”
“Okay, now look here, Harold, it was a crazy dream, that’s all! Do you hear me? There ain’t no gorilla!”
“All right, all right. It was a dream. You don’t need to get all bent out of shape.”
“Hey, you two guys know where I should drop this load off at?” a man screamed from the cab of his eighteen wheeler.
“What’s all the lumber for?” Jimmy asked, taking a good look at the strapped up wood on the back of the flatbed.
“A homeless shelter, supposed to be built on 5431 Main. Only thing is, since there ain’t no buildings down here, I don’t know where that lot would be.”
Jimmy’s curiosity got the best of him. “Who is building this homeless shelter?”
“How should I know? I just take the stuff where they tell me. Oh, wait a minute, the invoice is right here. Well color me light dull magenta, that’s a strange name.”
“What? What’s a strange name? Let me guess, his last name is Gorilla, right?”
“Well, I can’t rightly be sure?” the truck driver replied.
“Why can’t you be sure?” Jimmy yelled. “Is the signature hard to read? Is it partially ripped? Why can’t you be sure if the guy’s name is Gorilla or not?”
“Well cause the invoice just says Gorilla, and you asked me if that was his last name. Can’t very well tell if it is his first or his last name.”
“So he is real!” Harold yelled, doing a little jig as he circled his best friend. “The gorilla is real! He’s real! I talked to a talking gorilla.”
“I’m going home,” Jimmy announced, and began walking away. He didn’t see the kid riding his tricycle until it was almost too late. Lucky for Jimmy and the kid, the tricycle had one of those bells that announce its approach. Jimmy jumped to the ground, narrowly escaping the boy and his transportation. The bell kept ringing, and ringing, louder and louder…
“Honey, are you awake. Jimmy, you’re going to be late for work.”
It was a dream. It was all a dream; a maddening and frustrating dream, but a dream nonetheless. A talking and prophesying gorilla did not fit in very well with Jimmy’s personal faith. Though God had used a talking donkey and gigantic fish to get his point across in the past, Jimmy thought a dream invading, action calling gorilla seemed like a huge stretch.
Jimmy showered, shaved, packed his lunch and jumped in his friend’s car.
“Hey Jimmy, you’re not going to believe the dream I had last night.”
“Harold, not another word,” Jimmy demanded.
“But…”
“No!”
