‘Midst maple shade and breezes calm,
The Sawyer family, new in town—
One gap-toothed lad, with dad and mom.
Buddy, the lad, had tawny hair.
The impish six-year-old was slim.
Across the shadow-dappled street
A grassy playground beckoned him.
With purpose, Buddy crossed the street—
Uncharted regions to explore.
He happened on a fenced-in lot,
His summer expectations soared.
A dog park! With a sign attached,
“Gain entrance here – ‘Bark in the Park’—
A place where dogs play with their kids.
Opens at dawn— closes at dark.”
Enraptured, Bud was mesmerized,
The children scampered with their pets.
He prayed that he would make some friends—
But hitherto, he’d none, as yet.
Then several youngsters, just his age,
Approached with curiosity,
Inquired if he had a dog.
He answered, “no,” dejectedly.
So, every day, parked at the fence,
Devoid of dog, he stayed outside.
While inside frolicked fur and friends—
Gamboling games, to him denied.
Then one resplendent, glorious day
Came a birthday gift that cheered him up,
A rescue pet, from Dad and Mom—
One roly-poly, shaggy pup.
Excited he could join the gang—
His pup’s “Bark in the Park” debut.
‘What kind of dog is that?” they asked.
Bud’s eyes grew wide, he’d not a clue.
‘Cause Michael had a Rottweiler
And William claimed a Poodle,
While Louise’s German Shepherd
Romped with Harold’s Labradoodle.
Around Bud’s pup they circled in—
They’d help decode his puppy’s breed.
With analytical approach—
Exact genetics guaranteed.
So, William was the first to speak.
“His floppy ears sweep to the ground.
I think your dog, quite possibly,
Might be some sort of sporting hound.”
Then, Michael tossed a willow stick.
The pup returned the stick to Bud,
So Michael boldly ascertained,
“He clearly has retriever blood.”
Next Harold piped in his two cents,
“Your pup is imitating moles.
I’m certain he’s a terrier mix
Because he’s skilled at digging holes.”
Her face squished in the puppy’s fur,
Was pert, bespectacled Louise.
“He’s hypo-allergenic ‘cause
He didn’t make me wheeze and sneeze.”
Then Buddy broadcast to the world,
(The parentage dilemma fixed)
“He’s part retriever, terrier, hound,
And hypo-allergenic mix!”
