stepping forward

A flood flushed river
The presence of God
carried on priests’ shoulders
Joshua steps forward
Faith forms walls of water and dry ground
A pile of stones gathered
A step closer to the promised rest
Jericho
curtains closed and drawn
doors locked tight
Joshua steps forward
circling the city
Faith shifts and stirs
A shout and the stronghold crumbles
A step closer to the promised rest
An alliance
Five kings rise up and join forces
to crush Israel’s allies
Joshua steps forward
Hailstones like boulders fall
The sun stands still over Gibeon
Five cursed kings hang from trees
A step closer to the promised rest
Southern cities conquered
Northern kings quelled
The sword leaves no survivors as
Joshua steps forward
No treaties of peace negotiated
God fights for Israel
until at last
Joshua steps into his promised rest
A promised rest to
me
A rest on all sides where

Fulfilling all promises
He steps forward
He passes through the Jordan
The walls of water
bestow upon Him a mantle of power
Jesus steps forward
Striding into people’s lives
He opens curtains and unlocks doors
With a word strongholds crumble
A step closer to the promised rest
An alliance of piety and politics
join forces to crush Him
Silent, the Lamb of God,
Jesus steps forward
Sin carried on his shoulders
the sun refuses to shine
My King hangs from a tree
A step closer to the promised rest
Sin is conquered
The sting of death destroyed
The enemy is stripped of all weapons
Jesus steps forward
An eternal peace negotiated
God fights for me
Until at last
I step into my promised rest
