Lost walked around in death shoes
on a path to separation.
He laughed with arrogance the notion
of forever long damnation.
Yet inwardly he cried for peace
for fullness, life, and meaning.
So he measured up his neighbor,
Saved, and listened for a gleaning.
"Life, forgiveness, peace, and heaven!"
Saved remarked with tongues of flame.
But inch by inch, Lost understood
The two men were the same:
Same cheating on the taxes
Same lying to the wife
Same laughing at the profane jokes
Same mediocre life
Lost found the measure useless
To embrace a faith so small
That garnered not a cup of change,
No difference at all.
Saved continued with his preaching
But to Lost it seemed a ruse;
If inch by inch they were the same
What did he have to lose?
Hopeless now the dying man
grew prideful, even more
satisfied there was no answer.
Saved shrugged and closed his door.
