Evacuate!

Some listened, some ignored
Some left, some stayed
As the storm crept up the coastline

One
Time
Mattered . . .
Her arrival

And when her time came
She lashed out pent-up rage
Swirling and smashing, tearing and toppling
In a tantrum, daring to destroy

Too late
To evacuate

Ocean water invaded homes
Killing memories
Of other times, special times

When her stamina waned
And she faded into a gentle breeze
Time changed for those she abused

Thrust back to pioneer days
Time measured by the setting sun
Dusty lanterns found,
Unused jars of scented candles
Now lit
Cloaked the darkness with vanilla and jasmine
Blankets replaced heaters
Canned food replaced meals
Tears replaced time

How long til this time passes?
And tick tocks back to normal?
Days were cancelled
Scribbled events on calendars
Never happened
Time stops when towns are torn

But who owns time?
Who controls tomorrow?
He who made today,
Who gives and takes away.

Some see the ruin
Some see the light

Storms will happen,
Stealing what we canít hold
Stealing time, so

One
Time
Matters . . .
Eternity

Wow this is as powerful as the storm was. The details and emotions you created in me were outstanding. I hope you are writing this from seeing the storm on TV but I have a feeling it's more through personal experience and if that's the case know I have prayed and will continue to do so. God bless.

There's power in brevity, and you have shown this so clearly.

CONGRATULATIONS on your E.C. win!! Wonderful writing here--so highly descriptive, such as:
"Unused jars of scented candles
Now lit
Cloaked the darkness with vanilla and jasmine."

Your word choices perfectly portrayed the storm in all its destructive passion. I also loved the beautiful ending and how it tied with the beginning. WAY TO WRITE!! :)

ooohh this was a brilliant way to put 'the storm' and our storms in perspective. Well done!

I appreciated the "timeliness" (to Sandy) at the beginning of your poem. And then your final message in the last stanza is powerful! Wow! Congrats on your Editor's Choice award.
