FEBRUARY 2012

FaithWriters.com news and information for the write-brained Christian!

"Hang my locket around your neck, wear my ring on your finger. Love is invincible facing danger and death. Passion laughs at the terrors of hell. The fire of love stops at nothing— it sweeps everything before it." – Song of Solomon 8:6 (MSSG)

According to this verse, love is invincible, even when facing danger or death. In other words, love is powerful! In February, countries all around the world recognize Valentine's Day as a time to celebrate the love and affection between couples. While Valentine's Day was originally named after one or more of the Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine, it has become much more commercialized in recent years. Whatever your feelings about Valentine's Day, and whether or not you personally recognize this holiday, you can't deny that any day encouraging people to love one another is a day worth celebrating.

Speaking of love, many FaithWriters members read and/or write romance. Be sure to check out the Out of the Mouths of FaithWriters section at the end of this newsletter to see why or why not romance novels are the genre of choice.

YOUR UPGRADED FAITHWRITERS ACCOUNT

Last month, we mentioned that we encountered some problems with our payment processor. We've worked out the major kinks and have now gone with a new processor. If you were one of the members whose account was affected, and your Gold or Platinum account was de-activated, could you take a moment and re-sign-up? We greatly appreciate your cooperation in our efforts to keep FaithWriters thriving in the years ahead.

Check out all of the benefits that come with your upgraded account and/or sign up here: http://www.faithwriters.com/finish-signup.php

WEEKLY WRITING CHALLENGE

One of the best reasons to upgrade your account is so you can participate in the Writing Challenge. After a brief trial period of bi-weekly entries, the Challenge is back to its former weekly basis. Not only does the Writing Challenge help you develop your skill by writing to a word count, a topic, and a deadline, but it also provides wonderful feedback from other members. Feedback and constructive critique that will encourage and bless you. You may even be the randomly selected weekly winner and receive detailed feedback on that week's Challenge entry, including your personal ratings from the judges. And don't forget about the annual Writing Challenge award, where all of the number one entries from the year are judged for the title of Best of the Best. The top three entries receive a nice cash prize!

What are you waiting for? Jump into the Challenge today. Grow as a writer, be encouraged, and have fun!

FAITHWRITERS CONFERENCE 2012

Many members have asked if there is going to be a FaithWriters conference this year. And we'd love to give you a definite YES! However, due to the current economic situation, we don't want to go ahead with the preparations for such a large event until we're certain we have the support and commitment of enough members to make it financially possible.

So, we need your help! Whether or not you are planning to attend the conference, can you please take a moment and visit the FaithWriters message boards and let us know?  There is a poll already set up in one of the forums. All you need to do is mark ABSOLUTELY; ALMOST 100% CERTAIN; or PROBABLY NOT. Here is a link to the forum thread: http://www.faithwriters.com/Boards/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=34567&p=495958#p495958

Here are some details to keep in mind before you vote:

DATE: Friday and Saturday, August 10 & 11

LOCATION: Livonia, Michigan (Detroit)

WHAT: Two days of intense – and fun! – writing workshops and sessions taught by dynamic and experienced writers/authors/editors/agents. Included is Saturday breakfast and lunch, as well as snacks throughout.

PRICE: Approximately $80-$90

HOTEL COST: Approximately $100 per night (but rooming with one or more members will significantly cut down this amount)

We would love to go ahead with scheduling the conference, and truly hope enough of you are able to attend this year.

Thanks for your help!

OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF FAITHWRITERS

In keeping with February's love theme, FaithWriters were asked to answer this question:

DO YOU READ ROMANCE NOVELS? WHY OR WHY NOT?

Here is what some of our members had to say:

"I read romance novels to check how other writers work, who are published, so I can help my own novel writing." - Dorothy Moffitt

"I don't care for romance novels. I find them formulaic and predictable, and the characters typically one-dimensional. The situations often seem contrived and unrealistic, and unfortunately, the writing generally leaves much to be desired." – Jan Ackerson

"Yes they do carry lessons to the constitution called love, and to marriage. They raise awareness of what people go through, and they carry answers to some questions you would never ask out loud." – Terence Razerera

"Yes, I read Christian love stories, also Amish Christian love stories.  I think they are so en-heartening and they remind me of our Christian Values." – Susan Allen

"I grew up in the era of Harlequin romance novels, so I truly cannot say that I had any other experience with such novels or stories. As for me, they do not appeal to me due to their themes and story lines. I prefer more action, adventure and suspense when it comes to fiction. I like westerns and mysteries." – Rev. Bruce Jackson

"I used to read them, but today I do not, simply because they lend themselves to the fantasy world. As Christians, we are to be sober minded and vigilante, which means we cannot afford to simply daydream about what we wish could have been. I do, however, enjoy watching faith based family programming with a romantic story line in them." – Lisa Carter

"I do, because I like to get lost in the fairy tale world and forget about reality for awhile." – Barbara Lynn Culler

Next month's Question:

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE WRITING PROCESS?

Send your brief (and creative) response to FaithWriters.contact@yahoo.com. Please keep your answers to 1-2 sentences. Check back next month to see if your answer was selected to appear.

THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN FOR CHOOSING FAITHWRITERS.COM. WISHING YOU A FEBRUARY FILLED WITH LOVE!
