The HOME for Christian writers! The Home for Christian Writers!

JULY 2010

FaithWriters.com news and information for the write-brained Christian!

"And he said to them, "Come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a while." For many were coming and going, and they had no leisure even to eat." – Mark 6:31 (ESV)

Although God wants us to work hard and blesses our efforts, He also makes it clear we are to take time to rest. As we know, even God rested after six days of labor. While it's important for us to set aside one day per week to refresh and de-stress from our jobs, as well as honor God by spending time in worship, summer is a wonderful time to utilize that hard-earned vacation time with some extended rest and relaxation. Whether you experience the magic of Disney World, lounge on a white sandy beach in Aruba, or spend a week camping with the family, it's important and wise to take a breather from your everyday tasks and responsibilities.

Hopefully, you have plans this summer to take it easy, slow down, unwind, and simply rest. Be sure to read the Out of the Mouths of FaithWriters section at the end of this newsletter, where members share their most memorable vacation.

Well, it's that exciting time of year again. Time to see who will wear the Best of the Best crown for the next 12 months!

Contenders for the Best of the Best consisted of the forty #1 Weekly Writing Challenge entries from the past year (out of 4,500 entries, total!). A panel of judges carefully read and rated each entry. Then the scores were calculated to determine the top three winners. Judges say the competition was fierce this year, with the 4th, 5th, and 6th placed entries all scoring incredibly close. But one entry came out on top. So, without further ado, the title goes to…

ANN GROVER for her #1 entry, No Man's Land (topic: The Writer's Challenge): http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-level4-previous.php?id=35894

Ann's name has been in the BoB winner's circle before, but this is the first time she's hit that top slot. Join me in congratulating Ann for this huge honor! Ann wins $300 cash, plus, for the next 12 months, she gets to wear the coveted BOB Crown! WOOT! Be sure to watch for an interview with Ann, coming soon.

Two other members deserve recognition as second and third place winners. They are:

2nd Place - MONA PURVIS for her #1 entry, OH! Heaven Leigh Day!! (Ow! topic): http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-editors-previous.php?id=33702

3rd Place - SHERI GORDON for her #1 entry, Ruined (Oops topic): http://www.faithwriters.com/wc-article-editors-previous.php?id=33841

Mona and Sheri receive $100 and $75, respectively, for their placing entries.

CONGRATULATIONS to all three of these wonderfully talented ladies!

A new year of Challenges begins this month. Get ready to be challenged with some fun new topics. Who knows? Next year, YOUR name could appear in the winner's circle!

Here is the question posed last month:

What is the best or most memorable vacation you've ever taken?

Thanks to everyone who sent in their answers. Here are just a few:

"My most memorable is the Eldorado Royal Resort in the Mayan Riviera. Very romantic!" - Angie Alongi

"As missionaries we were grateful to the generosity of friends for accommodation. Two weeks at a lovely seaside home at Waihi Beach (New Zealand) were unforgettable. Physically and emotionally weary we found the Lord was very close - we were refreshed and renewed for service. " – Denis Shuker

"My five sisters and two brothers and I always thought we would live close to one another, but over the years we found ourselves far away from each other in five different states.  Miraculously, in 1989 we were able to plan a family reunion in Orlando.  We rented two condos and for two glorious weeks we celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and even had Christmas in July for all of the children.  The memory is bittersweet because in 1991, my sister Mildred died in the Colorado Springs airline disaster that took the lives of all on board.  I thank God that we were able to be together one last time." - Carmen Redding

"My family's most memorable and rewarding vacation ever taken was our trip to Mexico to participate in a "house build" for an impoverished community. Within one weekend our church group built 7 houses." - Allen B. Stark

"Fun camping trips: sleeping by a fire with a rock as my pillow and the moon as my nightlight. Except the time when I met a pesky little thing, by the last name of Ivy, which I hope to never have the undesirable pleasure of meeting again." - Bob Valleau

What is one thing you'd change about yourself if you could?

Send your brief response to FaithWriters.contact@yahoo.com. Please keep your answers to 1-2 sentences. Check back next month to see if your answer was selected to appear.
