What do I do if someone wants to hire me to write something?

Find out as much about the need as possible. Some freelancer writers demand an escrow account be established where a portion of the funds for the project can be deposited. The reason this is done is to allow the freelancer the assurance that they will be paid for their work.

When you have an established client it may not be necessary to take this precaution.

Some freelancers will also seek a contract that spells out what they are being asked to do and when the end product is to be delivered. It further spells out terms of payment and the fee schedule both parties have agreed to. The rights you are giving up should also be listed in the contract.

If the work is less than 2,000 words a contract may be unnecessary.
