READ WHAT OTHER
FAITHWRITERS 500 MEMBERS SAY:
A WONDERFUL GIFT
By Karen Wilber
Once there was a girl who loved to write. She wrote stories and skits for her classmates. She wrote long, detailed reports for her bosses. "I love writing," she said.
"You should write a best selling novel," someone said.
God had given the girl a gift and she got busy unwrapping it. She collected interesting quotes. She jotted story ideas in notebooks. She loved the sound and feel of words bumping into each other on the page.
"That's nice," someone said.
She wished she could find someone else who understood her.
One evening, she searched the Internet and found FaithWriters. She peeked into the website and discovered a virtual land of sinners and saints striving to learn how best to serve God with their own gifts. Before she knew it, she tiptoed into the land by submitting a Writing Challenge entry. She then walked deeper into message board discussions of content and format. She began to discover more about her own gift. She knew she'd finally come home. She joined the FaithWriters 500.
She even began writing in first person:
I stumbled into FaithWriters a little over 9 months ago. I was looking for a website that might give me some pointers on how to write for a Christian market. What I discovered was a community that has nurtured, taught, and even lectured a little. My fellow writers continually challenge me to stretch myself, to take risks, and to nurture my talent. With their support I've opened myself up to the Spirit's leading and found that I am capable of writing words that others enjoy reading. I've begun to turn some ideas into real projects that I hope to complete this year.
FaithWriters greatest asset is people and this is a community that cares. I've found support from others who understand the creative process, who understand that writing is work, work that brings both joy and pain. This is a community that rejoices together, prays together, and plays together.
My favorite FaithWriters perk is the formal and impromptu lessons on writing. The ability to ask questions and get feedback has helped me develop as a writer and I can honestly say the knowledge I've gained here has helped me sell a few articles. I may never write that best selling novel, but who knows where God will lead me.
Not bad for a girl who just loves to write.
