Chapter One
The Historical Setting

The Ten Commandments were not given to Adam and Eve, the generations of humanity preceding the Flood of Noah’s time, nor were they given to the Christian Church as the means to receive or retain salvation.

In fact, they were not even given to the ancient Hebrews until several centuries into their own history.

Several generations of the Jewish patriarchs lived and died without every having heard of the Ten Commandments.

Abraham and Sarah were the parents of Isaac who fathered Jacob, who fathered the patriarchs from whom eventually came the tribes of Israel. These brothers, or half-brothers, were the products of the marriages of Jacob and several wives.

Following a sibling conspiracy, Joseph, one of the patriarchs was sold into slavery and Jacob (renamed Israel) was led to believe by the conspiring brothers that wild animals had killed Joseph.

Joseph became the slave of Potiphar, captain of the royal bodyguard, in Egypt. Joseph was imprisoned after falsely being accused of trying to rape his master’s wife. However, God caused Joseph eventually to be favored by the existing Pharaoh and in the course of time making it possible for the some seventy Hebrews to establish themselves in Egypt after being subjected to a famine.
