Well, this will tell you all about me, in a letter that I wrote to my husband when we had been married 50 years. We are now approaching 60 years of marriage, so I have added to the first one. Hope it is flowing okay. It is pretty long!(Well, I guess 60 years is long too! :)
My dear, when I met you, many long years ago,
We both had magnificent dreams, and our faces were aglow!
With vibrancy of youth, only yesterday, it seems
That it wasn’t very long before you entered my dreams!
We wrote many love letters as our fairytale unfolded.
(We weren’t always discreet, and for that, we were scolded!)
We were so mature, (or naïve) to wait ‘till you were seventeen, to wed.
With dreams of a glorious wedding day; but we were greeted with sobs instead.
Of course, how could two kids who were already in debt,
Ever make a marriage work, without much to regret?
Were they all wrong? Yes, we struggled through the years,
With many beautiful times, and, yes, many sorrowful tears.
In eleven month’s time, our marriage was blessed,
With a baby girl, who often disturbed our rest!
You labored long and hard, which was really quite a feat;
And all of our mountainous bills, we were able to meet!
Our precious little daughter became our pride and joy,
There became a silent yearning to have a bouncing baby boy!
But times were hard, and money short, this desire had to wait;
Yet, this dream also came true, when our daughter was nearly eight!
We had moved to a home, quite close to my parent’s farm,
Then, a farmer you became, still full of the same old charm.
Our lives became filled with cows, pigs, corn, beans, and prices,
Broken machinery, fertilizer and pesticides, we were glad for advices!
But, in the farming game, you expanded, and were doing very well,
Until health problems arose, and our herd of cows, we had to sell.
Our daughter was graduated, and went to college for nursing school,
Of course, there, she found a lad who she thought was “very cool”
This led to the happy occasion of her beautiful wedding day;
We felt a little sadness, knowing that she had gone to stay!
Yes, everyone has some dark clouds as they live as man and wife.
An accident claimed our handsome son; it truly crushed our life!
Our attitudes in life, and our goals really changed;
But a closer walk with God, our lives have sustained!
Four beautiful, sweet children, were born to our daughter
A wonderful experience, to become grandmother and grandfather!
You’ve been a great provider, as you labored through the years;
From my heart, I truly say, there have been more smiles than tears.
We now have two great-grandkids; new joys have blessed our home!
We have even gone on some cruises upon the Caribbean foam!
And, I just want to say, many of our dreams have come true;
But, really, most important of all, after fifty years, “I still love you”
(THE LETTER CONTINUED AFTER ANOTHER TEN YEARS)
Well, our 50th Anniversary has passed, 10 years out of view;
And, would you really believe, that my love has stuck like glue?
Oh, yes, we don’t always agree, but then, our hearts are sad;
So we work as hard as we can, to make each other glad!
During these years, we’ve been blessed, yes, again and yet again-
With 4 more great grandchildren, what a joy that they have been!
God has been so very faithful, since our 50th. Anniversary!
Even though, in the past few years, we’ve both had surgery!
God has reached out to our family, and drawn them closer to Him!
Our hearts have been SO grateful, for His loving, and leading them!
Hopefully, our lives have matured, and closer to God, we’ve grown;
Jesus has become more precious, we pray that His seed, we’ve sown!
Each of the last 8 years, we’ve spent three weeks in precious Ukraine,
Helping with each need we can, preaching and praying, souls to gain.
How long we will have the strength, only our Savior knows;
But we we’ll keep our trust in God, no matter how our strength goes!
So, even if God gives us, maybe even more years than ten,
You still will be my lover, the most precious of all men!
