From the collection NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES, based on the various names of God. El Roi means the God who sees.
El Roi, you saw Hagar in the desert
cast out, lost and alone.
You called to her,
gave her direction,
a purpose for living.
El Roi, you saw your people
enslaved by the Egyptians,
beaten down,
forced to work like animals.
You set them free
by your saving power.
El Roi, you see the children of this world,
orphaned and enslaved,
starving and alone;
you see nation against nation,
people against people,
lustful, greedy,
warring, killing, destroying;
your heart breaks
as we deny and betray you.
El Roi, You see
even the tiniest sparrow fall;
your compassion is deeper
than the ocean.
Your watchful eye looks for those
who are willing
to be your servants,
to be a fatherís arms
guarding and protecting,
to be a motherís love
nurturing and caring,
to feed the starving,
care for the orphans,
lift up the fallen,
work for peace and justice.
El Roi, you see us as we really areó
flawed and imperfect.
Were we to hide in the deepest cave
or lose ourselves among the stars,
still we could not hide from you.
You see us with eyes of love;
you call us, like Hagar in the desert,
to return home to You.
