This is part of a collection I wrote focusing on the names of God. This one focuses on things eternal and our God who is eternal.
EL OLAM, GOD OF ETERNITY
Lord, I confess
the ideas of infinity and eternity
are beyond my power to comprehend.
I am terrified, living in fear,
like falling into a bottomless pit—
out-of-control, lost in an abyss.
Yet, there is one truth I can cling to:
You are El Olam, the God of eternity;
before You created the universe
You were eternally God,
and You have set eternity in my heart.
Lord, I confess
I have no sense of eternity,
my vision is myopic;
instead of storing riches in heaven
I focus on the here and now;
instead of concern for Your kingdom,
I focus on my own immediate wants and needs.
Yet, there is one truth I can cling to:
You are El Olam, the God of eternity;
before You created the universe
You were eternally God,
and You have set eternity in my heart.
Lord, I confess
my sense of eternity is lost
in the weariness of my self-absorption.
I am a complainer,
my voice a scratch on a CD,
repeating the same wearisome things
over and over.
Yet, there is one truth I can cling to:
You are El Olam, the God of eternity;
before You created the universe
You were eternally God,
and You have set eternity in my heart.
Lord, I confess
my goals fall far short of eternity.
The plans I make do not always include
You or Your kingdom.
I am impulsive, compulsive,
indecisive, and stubborn
like an untamed horse,
or belligerent mule.
Yet, there is one truth I can cling to:
You are El Olam, the God of eternity;
before You created the universe
You were eternally God,
and You have set eternity in my heart.
Lord, I confess my need--
to have my heart set in eternity,
my focus on Your kingdom--
so, I cling to these truths:
You are El Olam, the God of eternity,
Your goodness is everlasting,
and Your love lasts for all generations;
I need not fear,
for You know what I need.
You are El Olam, the God of eternity,
You never grow tired or weary,
I need not fear,
for when I am weak,
You are strong.
You are El Olam, the God of eternity
Your plans stand firm forever,
I need not fear,
for You have set a course for my life;
You have prepared a place for me in eternity.
