The tapes keep playing and playing
Of that childhood so long ago
As I listen to what they are saying
I see I was an adult and didn't know
I had to take care of even my mother
She was always to drunk to parent
Then there were my sisters and brothers
Who were demanding and dependent
I needed to be strong all the time
If I wasn't my family would perish
There was not a minute that was mine
No fun, laughing moments to cherish
As I grew I didn't grow up I only aged
I had to be perfect, do all things right
It's like I stayed on the same page
Until God showed me the light
Now I still struggle as I hear the tape
It's hard to give it all over to Him
I want to be a child in this adult shape
But He makes the sound of the tape grow dim
