“Because I said so.” How many times did you hear this response growing up from your parents? And if you are a parent, how many times have you said the same thing to your own children? I’ve used the phrase more than I care to admit. As a child I would walk away with a less than good attitude, mocking my mother or grandmother under my breath, all while thinking to myself you just don’t want me to have any fun, you ruin everything.
Now older, I realize that the phrase itself lacks sufficient explanation to a child. “Because I said so” doesn’t fully answer the question to the why’s that precede the answer. As I reflect, I wonder if it was because my mother was far too busy to answer the why, or simply didn’t want to be bothered with all the why questions. Little did I know then, that the answer was given for my own good. My parents weren’t out to ruin my fun, but to keep me from harm.
As children it’s hard to understand why our parent’s say no, or continually keep us from “having our fun.” In our mind it’s because they don’t love us, understand us, or want to ruin our life. Now that we are all grown up, we can see the true answer behind “Because I said so.”
The answer is "I love you." Like our parents, God is not ruining our fun, or out to get us, but rather to give his children a future and a hope. I can’t tell you how many times the Holy Spirit has warned me from sure disaster. Had I not listened who knows the damage my disobedience could have made.
When God says no, or you think that he is trying to ruin your life; instead of shoving your hands into your pocket, putting your head down, and mumbling under your breath as you walk away remember that it’s for your own good. He knows the whys and he’s got the answer.
Prayer: Father, open my heart and unveil my eyes and help me to know that everything you do has a purpose. You always have my best interest at heart.
