My Little Tiger
By Gene Hudgens(C)
They say the tiger loves to roam at night
In her mind making the calculations just right
Constantly checking and insuring her plight
Preparing her turf in case of a fight
And so I found it to be with my beautiful pet
She’s fun and playful, but fearful of a net
All through the years she has proved there is none by me
At the same time insuring I know that she is independently free
So often we sit and talk of our friend’s perils
Insuring we avoid the mistakes of their narrow worlds
I think we try hard to sense the mood the other feels
To avoid the chance of bad words that will not heal
So different from the other cats…my little tiger prefers the light
For certain she does not like strong winds blowing at night
When there is a storm she moves close to my side
I’ve learned to like the storms and her closeness to my hide
She takes time to listen to the neighbor’s stories as they bite their nails
And in the evening I take time to listen to the repeat of these tales
It is fun to sit with my tiger in the day or night
She is very brilliant and her thoughts are bright
So very often we sit for hours after we dine
Just talking and catching up as we enjoy our favorite wine
With everything she says I do not agree
But for her reasons of thinking I try to see
Our cultures are different to say the least
But she assures me daily that she is a Leo…my little tiger and not a beast
I tell her she is an individual and that what she does is her right
She tells me too that I am an individual, but I notice I’m never out of her sight
Oh we have our times when tensions are high
But we are both careful that fur doesn’t fly
When she is real quiet I know she really thinks she is right
I’ve learned to move in close to end any silliness before going to bed at night
Normally it doesn’t take long before she gives me her lips and a little bite
And I get that good feeling that we will be up tight tonight
Throughout all of these forty years it has been sheer delight
Especially with thoughts of my little Leo and me roaming the night.
