The Night Before Christmas

The night before Christmas
Things are as quiet as a mouse
The snack has been left for Santa
And the decorations are strung
I'm sitting and waiting not sleeping
In the morning it's Christmas
One year since they died on their way
To my place
For Happy Christmas
Remembered, forgotten.

The night before Christmas
I know because all the white faces have left
Gone home
To feast and celebrate the saviour of all mankind
Except perhaps my kind
Tomorrow my daughter will die
Aids has no holy days
There will be no feast
Only one less mouth to feed
No tears come anymore

The night before Christmas
For the moment the guns are quiet
Tomorrow they will chatter
Adding red to the celebrations
A foreign celebration
About some prince of peace
They bring the feast
They bring their Santa
They bring no peace
No wise men in the east

The night before Christmas
The long journey
Ended too late
She's heavily pregnant
Crying,
In the dirty stable with the animals
He helps her down
And her baby is born
It's not even his child
No tinsel here.

The night before Christmas
My children are in bed
Stockings are filled
They are safe and well fed
In the morning we will sing
Unwrap gifts and eat well
Along with millions of other children
About 10% of the children
He came to save
(Jesus, not Santa)
